Absolutes

Super-concentrated, highly aromatic oils extracted from plants. Different from essential oils due to the method they are obtained. Essential oils are collected through steam distilling or cold pressing while absolutes require a more delicate solvent extraction technique, traditionally called enfleurage.

Aloe Barbadenis Leaf Extract (Organic)

Skin-loving extract of the Aloe Barbadenis (Aloe Vera) plant. Naturally moisturizes and soothes skin. Backing up centuries old beliefs of its reparative and soothing powers, researchers at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain reported that both Aloe Vera flower and leaf extracts had antioxidant properties. A team of plastic surgeons compared Aloe Vera gel to 1% silver sulphadiazine cream (common burn treatment) for the treatment of second degree burn wounds and found that Aloe Vera gel showed advantage compared to those dressed with SSD regarding early wound epithelialization, earlier pain relief and cost-effectiveness. Aloe Extract is quickly becoming the go-to ingredient for natural skin relief with proven results and benefits. *Please note: the extract we use is decolorized. The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) recently added Aloe vera, non-decolorized whole leaf extract to their Proposition 65 list. We do not use, and have never used, that extract.

Extract from the root and leaves of the Althaea Officinalis, commonly known as Marshmallow and native to parts of Africa. Traditionally it is used to reduce inflammation, soothe and soften chapped skin.

An extract of the Pineapple fruit. Its astringency lends well to cleansing products. It contains an enzyme called bromelain which naturally reduces inflammation. Rich in amino acids, Pineapple is soothing and moisturizing for skin. Antioxidants 

Antioxidants counteract the destructive effect of free radicals. Free radicals are unstable elements within the body that can cause harm. Antioxidants are naturally occurring in many fruits, herbs and plants. They can be used to help preserve a product and deliver detoxifying benefits to the skin.

Apricot Kernel Oil

Oil expressed from the kernels of Apricots. This light oil helps to seal in moisture without leaving a greasy residue. It also lubricates without leaving a greasy feeling on the skin.

Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil (Organic)

Produced from the nut of the Argan tree native to Morocco. Also called Moroccan oil, it is naturally high in oleic and linoleic fatty acids and Vitamin E. Highly valued in cosmetic circles for its deeply moisturizing properties without being heavy or greasy.

Arnica Extract

Made from dried Arnica flowers, this extract has been traditionally used to reduce the appearance of skin blemishes and ease muscular discomfort.

An extract of oat kernels. Used traditionally to reduce inflammation and calm irritated skin. Naturally soothing and rich in nutrients, Oat Kernel extract is great for skin conditioning.

This oil is cold pressed from the avocado fruit. Loaded with Vitamins A, B, C, D E and K, this oil is a nutrient-rich gift to skin and hair. Beeswax (Organic)

Naturally produced by honey bees (genus Apis), beeswax is composed mostly of fatty acids. It is mainly esters of fatty acids and various long-chain alcohols. Used in body care products as a thickener and formula stabilizer, Beeswax is believed to support the skin’s moisture barrier.

Behenalkonium Chloride 

A mild ammonium salt. Functions as an excellent conditioning and anti-static agent. Helps to improve hair body and manageability. Rinses easily and leaves a smooth after feel.

An ammonium salt used for its preservative and conditioning properties. Thought to improve wet and dry compatibility, this ingredient promotes volume and body to hair. Also provides anti-static and defrizzing benefits without leaving behind product build-up.

Benzyl Alcohol

A mild preservative, this alcohol protects products from microbial contamination. Benzyl Alcohol and Benzoic Acid are able to be produced synthetically but are also found naturally occurring in many foods and plants. Benzoic Acid is found in Apricots, Snap Beans, Cocoa, Cranberries, Mushrooms and Honey. Benzyl Alcohol is also found in the essential oils of many plants including Jasmine, Hyacinth and Ylang Ylang.

Bergamot Essential Oil

Extracted by cold pressing the peel of the Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) fruit. Fresh Bergamot has a subtle but bright, uplifting scent. Lighthearted Bergamot is a wonderful oil to diffuse to counteract feelings of sadness. Bergamot reminds us to lighten up and laugh.

Beta Carotene

Naturally occurring in plants, especially abundant in Carrots, Pumpkins and Sweet Potatoes. Beta Carotene is a group of red, yellow and orange pigments called carotenoids. These carotenoids are what the body uses to create Vitamin A. It possesses antioxidant and cellular renewal properties.

Beta Glucan

A soluble fiber found in the cell walls of Oat kernels. Acts as a film-forming agent by protecting and maintaining the moisture barrier. Naturally emollient (moisturizing), Beta Glucan alleviates dry and itchy skin.

Oil steam distilled from unripe, sun-dried Peppercorns. When applied topically, this oil is warming and stimulating. Its aroma is sharp and energizing. Black Pepper reminds us to hold onto our dreams with both flexibility and stamina.

Blue Chamomile Essential Oil

Oil steam distilled from the flower heads of commonly known Chamomile or Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria). Chamomile is naturally calming, used in tea to promote relaxation and in body products to soothe skin as well as the senses. This oil is actually blue! The flower contains azulene (chamazulene) which gives it a blue color. Chamomile reminds us to be kind and calm.

Bromelain

A digestive enzyme derived from Pineapple. In skin care products, it functions as a gentle exfoliator, digesting dead protein (as in surface skin cells) and ridding the skin of debris and irritants that clog and enlarge pores.

Calendula (Calendula Officinalis) Flower Extract (Organic)

Extracted from the Calendula Officinalis plant, commonly known as Marigold. It is soothing to skin. Studies suggests that Calendula Officinalis promotes statistically significant acceleration of wound healing (Duran 2005). Calendula Officinalis cream has been shown to be effective for the treatment of diaper dermatitis in children up to two years of age (Guala 2007). Naturally soothing, Calendula is one of the star ingredients in our signature EO® Organic Herbal Blend.

Sea salt harvested from the Pacific Ocean. Formed by channeling ocean water into ponds and allowing the sun and wind to evaporate it naturally. It is high in naturally occurring trace minerals, making an excellent, nutrient-rich ingredient for a bath soak.

Calmellia Japonica Seed Oil (Tsubaki Oil)

Camellia Japonica is a small flowering tree native to Korea and Japan. Called “Tsubaki” in Japan and sometimes referred to as the “Rose of winter” for the challenging season its flowers bloom in. Extracted from seeds, this soothing oil has a high antioxidant value which provides skin protection from environmental stressors. Used in facial care products, Tsubaki oil can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles by promoting collagen production and improving the retention of moisture.

Extracted from the evergreen shrub Camellia Sinensis whose leaves are used to make tea. Candelilla Wax

An herbal wax derived from the wild Euphorbia cerifera plant. Native to semi desert climates, this plant protects itself from adverse weather by covering itself in a greyish powder. This powder is actually mostly wax, helping the plant retain water and be protected against challenging weather. Similar to its functions in the plant, this wax is naturally emollient and protective in the formulations used for cosmetics. Its composition makes it an excellent substitute for plastic and rubber exfoliating products commonly found on the market.

Caprylic/CapricTriglyceride

A plant derived skin-conditioning agent. This oily liquid is easily absorbed by skin, leaving it softer without leaving a greasy residue.

A mild cleansing surfactant and an effective solubilizing agent for essential oils. Derived from plant based fatty acids, this biodegradable oily liquid is great for skin and for adding foaminess to soaps.

In cosmetics, this fluffy powder is used as a thickener. Consisting of synthetic polymers, carbomer has a particularly nice skin feel. A white, flaky wax-like material. Consisting of cetyl and stearyl alcohols, this ingredient is used in most lotions and conditioners as a thickener.

Commiphora Mukul, also known as the Mukul Myrrh tree, is a flowering plant native to Western India and the Arabian Peninsula. Coveted for its ability to withstand arid and rocky climates, this plant’s gummy resin has been used for centuries. This resin is harvested from the plant's bark through simple and effective tapping techniques. Used in Ayurvedic medicine, incense and perfumes, its lovely aroma is similar to the earthy scent of Myrrh. The active ingredient Commipheroline naturally restores volume in the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

Traditionally, Echinacea Angustifolia is used to increase bodily resistance to infections as it contains antiseptic properties. This extract is also naturally anti-inflammatory and soothing to troubled skin conditions.

Ectoin

A multi-functional substance derived from halophilic bacteria (e.g. Ectothiorhodospira halochloris). This bacteria grows under extreme conditions in salt lakes, saline soils, sea water and saline deserts. The halophilic bacteria’s natural environment is characterized by high dosages of UV-irradiation, dryness, extreme temperatures and a high salinity. Under these extreme conditions, the halophilic bacteria maintain cell stability by synthesizing Ectoin. Its resilience makes Ectoin a great ingredient in skin care! It helps skin recover from the effects of external stressors, increases moisture retention, reduces the appearance of wrinkles and protects against UV-induced damage.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are the oily liquids obtained from plants through a variety of processes such as cold pressing, CO2 extraction and steam distillation. They are complex mixtures of alcohols, ketones, phenols, acids, ethers, aldehydes, esters, oxides, and sulfur compounds (among others). They're also called volatile oils, ethereal oils or essences. It usually has the taste and smell of the plant it originates from. They are called essential oils because they are considered the fundamental “essence” of a plant. Throughout history, they have been considered essential to life.

Helianthus Annus (Sunflower) Seed Oil Unsaponifiable

Oil extracted from the wild Sunflower, native to North America. Small amounts of these unsaponifiable molecules are naturally present in Sunflower seed oil, and they are classified as noble molecules in view of their properties. Using a physical (solvent-free) process called “molecular distillation,” the unsaponifiable portion of the oil is concentrated to obtain this ingredient. It enhances the moisture retention capacity for optimal skin moisturization. This is possible by encouraging the production of key lipids ceramides, cerebrosides and cholesterols. Science!

 

  

Helichrysum Italicum Oil

The essential oil is steam distilled from the blossoms of the Helichrysum italicum plant. From the daisy family Asteraceae, this plant is also called Everlasting or Immortelle. Laminaria Saccharina Extract

Laminaria Saccharina Algae is manually harvested from the cold waters of the North Atlantic before the area is covered by ice. The plant grows up to 1cm/day during the summer period and accumulates nutrients and polysaccharides (laminarans) to survive throughout the winter season when water temperatures are as low as 1°C. It uses these nutrients and polysaccharides to restart the growth phase the following spring. When the Algae is exposed to such extreme conditions, the activation of selective metabolic pathways is triggered as well as the production of specific compounds within the Algae tissues. This hardy, nutrient-loaded plant makes an excellent ingredient in body care products. Phenoxyethanol can be found naturally in products such as Green Tea, but is often synthesized for commercial use. It is commonly used as a replacement for parabens to preserve products and prevent microbial contamination. Phenoxyethanol has been studied by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel and has been deemed practically nontoxic when taken internally or put on the skin. It is not linked to any birth defects, has not been known to cause hypersensitivity and has not been shown to irritate skin. We use it as a mild preservative.
