Ingredients We Won't Use

At EO Products, we believe that transparency enhances the quality of the products and services you use. We have compiled a list of ingredients that we don’t use in our bath and body care products. These are ingredients that have been linked to health and environmental issues. We prefer alternatives that are just as effective but have little to no impact on the people that use them and the planet we all share.

We don’t like GMOs. The long term health and environmental effects of GMOs are unknown. You won’t find genetically modified ingredients (not even ingredients that have used GMOs in their processing) in our products. Ever.

These ingredients are commonly used as emollients, emulsifiers and surfactants in skin care. The creation of PEGs leads to a carcinogenic byproduct called 1,4 dioxane which can end up in the ingredient and in your body. There are many plant based ingredients that can replace the use of PEGs so there is no good reason to use this potentially cancer-causing ingredient.

Parabens are used in body care as a preservative. Parabens mimic estrogen in the human body and they have been found in biopsy samples from patients with breast cancer.

Here at EO Products we see no reason to dye our products. We find incredible beauty in the natural colors of the plant extracts we use to create our products. Artificial colors have been linked to health concerns such as cancer, allergies and migraines.

We have a particular dedication to natural scents here at EO Products. The regulations in the cosmetics industry allow companies to hide potentially toxic ingredients under the heading “fragrance”. These hidden ingredients often contain phthalates, benzene derivatives and aldehydes that have been linked to endocrine disruption, nervous-system disorders and allergies. We only use pure essential oils and plant extracts to scent our products.

This chemical is commonly used as a preservative. EDTA is made from formaldehyde, a known carcinogen. In addition, EDTA is used to enhance the penetration of the other ingredients so if this ingredient is in a particular product, it has the potential of helping any other harmful ingredients to get deeper into your skin.

These industrial solvents are used as a fixative for synthetic scents. Phthalates are often hidden under the term “fragrance” on a label. Phthalates have been linked to damage to the endocrine and reproductive system. Furthermore, it has been well-documented that endocrine disruptors such as phthalates can be additive, so even very small amounts can interact with other chemicals to have cumulative, adverse "cocktail” effects.

Commonly used as thickening and foaming agents, DEA, MEA and TEA are all forms of ethanolamines. These ingredients have all been linked to cancer and tend to dry out the skin. The foam made from these chemicals is harmful to our planet. Safer alternatives are available such as Coconut oil derived surfactants.

Hydrogenated ingredients (also known as trans fats) are often used in skin care. Ingredients are hydrogenated to make them more stable and substantive but they are more likely to clog pores.

Glycols are commonly used in lotions and moisturizers as humectants. They draw moisture out of the air and pull it into the skin. However, glycols are also skin irritants and they enhance the absorption of other (potentially harmful) ingredients. We prefer to use Vegetable Glycerin, a natural humectant with no disturbing side effects.

Petrolatum is more commonly known as petroleum jelly. Made from mineral oil, petrolatum has a sealant effect on the skin. Mineral oil is oil made from crude petroleum. These products don’t allow skin to breathe or work naturally and the results are generally unhealthy for your skin. To top it off, there are no nutrients in these crude oil products so your skin is suffocated and not fed. We prefer any plant derived oils like Coconut, Olive & Jojoba.

Triclosan is commonly used as a biocide in hand sanitizers and antibacterial soaps. It has been shown to be persistent in the environment and may be associated with interrupted hormone balance and potentially increase our susceptibility to antibiotic resistant bacteria. Organic and non-GMO alcohol have antimicrobial properties without any of the toxic side effects, so that’s what you’ll find in our hand sanitizers.

BENZALKONIUM CHLORIDE (including Stearalkonium Chloride)

Commonly used as a biocide, preservative and a surfactant in household cleaners and soaps. Benzalkonium Chloride has been associated with severe skin, eye, and respiratory irritation and allergies. It has also been linked to increased resistance to antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Aluminum is a common active ingredient in deodorants that has been associated with a variety of health issues including breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease
